S.A., Australia (PRWEB) January 29, 2009 -- After a three-year hiatus, the Angove Family Winemakers' Vineyard Select Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc is back in the U.S. marketplace in limited release--and it's been worth the wait. Grape shortages and extensive frost damage meant that the 2006 and 2007 vintages of this vibrant, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc never left the vine. Careful work in the vineyard brought in a small but first-rate crop in 2008, enough for a limited production of 1,000 6-bottle cases.
Like the rest of the Angove Vineyard Select range--Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra, Riesling from Clare Valley and Chardonnay from the Limestone Coast--the Sauvignon Blanc hails from the prime Australian growing region for that variety: the Adelaide Hills, on the cool, southern coast of South Australia.
"Sauvignon can be a bit of a weed," says winemaker Tony Ingle, "so it's essential to have poor soil and to make sure the vineyard is not too hot. Our site fits perfectly, with a south-west facing slope and ancient soil." Ocean breezes, late-night picking, cool fermentation and minimal handling combine to produce a wine with intense tropical-citrus fruit and a good snap of acidity.
The new Angove vintage arrives at a time when Sauvignon Blanc is getting more attention in the marketplace. For the year ending in June, 2008, imported Sauvignon Blanc--primarily from cool-climate, Southern Hemisphere sources--grew 34% to 2 million cases, and Sauvignon Blancs priced about $14 a bottle gained 32% in volume in supermarket sales. Hard to imagine a better time to bring back a proven standout in its price and style category.
Angove Family Winemakers Vineyard Select Sauvignon Blanc is imported by Trinchero Family Estates and will be available in top wine shops and restaurants nationally with a suggested retail price of $16.99.
